About Me
Rebecca Petit is a native of Miami, Fla. Rebecca earned a Master's degree in Broadcast and Digital Journalism from Syracuse University's S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. She has a B.A. from Howard University, where she graduated Magna Cum Laude.
While earning her degrees, Rebecca interned at several news stations in Miami, Los Angeles and Washington, D.C. Her most memorable experience was working as a Multimedia Journalist at the United States Capitol. It afforded her the opportunity to cover important legislation and interview both Senators and Congressmen on Capitol Hill.
Rebecca is currently a Multimedia Journalist for ABC Action News in Tampa, Florida, joining the team in December 2020. She heads up their coverage in Polk County.
Rebecca started her broadcast career as a News Producer at KDBC in El Paso, Texas. While there, she helped launch the station's very first weekend newscasts.
Rebecca joined the WZDX team in Huntsville, Alabama as a Multimedia Journalist in 2017. During her time reporting in Huntsville, Rebecca covered the murder of missing 11-year-old, Amberly Barnett. She reported in-depth on human trafficking happening in North Alabama. Rebecca also did live reporting of the devastating aftermath of Hurricane Michael in Panama City, Florida.
In January 2019, Rebecca traveled to Haiti and reported on the country's week long international jazz festival. Using only an iPhone, she interviewed Grammy award winning musicians and produced two long-form packages about how Haiti's flourishing jazz scene is building the country's tourism industry.
Rebecca is a member of the National Association of Black Journalists. She is very passionate about the mission of local television news—to tell the stories of local communities and to give a voice to the people who live in them.
When she's not out telling your stories, she can be found hiking and exploring the outdoors, traveling and spending time with her family and Yorkie Chase.
If you have any story ideas, don't hesitate to contact her on Facebook and Twitter.
